Bosch has announced that Mike Collins of Jourdanton, TX, is the winner of the “The Gut Check Challenge” an online competition sponsored by Bosch Spark Plugs and held from June 6 to July 18 on the social media site, Facebook (www.facebook.com/boschautoparts).

A combination of multiple-choice questions followed by a final round of three write-in questions tested a contestant’s automotive know-how and spark plug smarts. Thousands of auto enthusiasts, technicians and do-it-yourself (DIY) motorists throughout the United States participated in the competition.

Grand prize winner Mike Collins is a professional diesel mechanic who works on cars as a hobby.  Collins and his teenage son, Chris, a budding car enthusiast, will attend the prestigious Mecum Auto Auction in Monterey, CA (Aug. 16-18, 2012), courtesy of Bosch. There, Wayne Carini, host of Velocity TV Network’s "Chasing Classic Cars" will help Collins bid on a ‘dream car’ that father and son can work on together to suit their personal needs and taste. If he wins the bid, Bosch will contribute up to $25,000 toward the purchase.

Bosch’s “The Gut Check Challenge” is a chance to acknowledge and reward our Facebook fans for ‘following’ our continuing efforts to educate the marketplace about the most current spark plug technology,” said Monica Christensen, Brand Manager for Bosch. “The competition was consistent with our current advertising campaign stressing that “The Gut Knows” quality automotive parts … like Bosch spark plugs,” Christensen said.

Bosch OE fine wire Iridium and Platinum spark plugs are made for American, Asian and European engines to meet or exceed OE specifications. Bosch original equipment design, materials and processes represent the best of OE technology making the Bosch OE fine wire spark plug the line that delivers improved ignitability and performance for extended service life. And, each comes with a multi-year money back performance satisfaction guarantee.

Christensen emphasized, “They are not just OE, they’re Bosch OE.”

The Mecum Auction Company specializes in the sale of collector cars, classic motorcycles and road art sales. Numerous Mecum auctions are held each year throughout the United States and broadcast live on Discovery’s Velocity Network. www.mecum.com.

“This is our fourth year conducting the Mecum Daytime Auction on the Monterey Peninsula and we are expecting more than 750 cars to cross the auction block,” said Dana Mecum, President, Mecum Auctions. “As in the past, we are expecting thousands of bidders and spectators to be in attendance. In 2011, the Mecum auction at Monterey resulted in a sell-through rate of 65 percent with $25 million in sales. We are confident that this time around we will exceed that figure.”

Commenting on his winning “The Gut Check Challenge,” Collins said, “I noticed the competition on Facebook and thought I’d give it a shot. I’ve never won anything of consequence but I figured, what the heck! I am so flattered and grateful. I am really excited about the opportunity to experience the auction with my son … I couldn’t have planned a more perfect dream trip!”

Collins, a third-generation professional mechanic, changes his own spark plugs. No wonder his ‘gut’ knew the right answers.

When Your Shop Is Worth Much More Than You Thought

Although every sale of a shop in which I am involved has its own unique set of circumstances, which makes my job both very interesting and very challenging, Cowden Automotive stands out as particularly memorable because I was able to demonstrate to the long-time owner, Paul Cowden, that his business was worth about three times what he had initially thought.

Case Study: Owner of San Francisco-based Import Service Shop Delighted to Discover Just How Valuable His Business is to Qualified Buyers
I sometimes share case studies of the clients I have been able to assist in my role as an aftermarket business broker and provider of intermediary and advisory services. I do that when I think the story will provide a reader in similar circumstances with new insights or helpful information.
In the case of Cowden Automotive, Inc., I acted in a consulting capacity assisting the owner and his broker in valuing the business, creating a marketing plan, finding a qualified buyer, and arranging financing for the sale.

Needless to say, delivering that kind of good news to a shop owner is a rewarding experience. Discovering that the sale of his business would result in his retirement nest-egg being substantially larger than he had ever thought was a fitting tribute to someone who had spent his entire working career as a busy automotive service shop owner.

Will You Adapt And Cope With Changing Technology?

I remember my boss complaining that electronic ignition was going to destroy our business back in the mid-’70s. “They are taking away our tune up business,” he would say. In some ways, he was right. Technology and change are things we can’t control. In fact, “change” is perhaps the one thing we can count on. And, as in life, it’s how we deal with change that matters.

The Secret To Price Advertising

Believe it or not, price advertising is a good thing. I am sure you will agree, everyone likes to find a good value, and price advertising lets people in your community know that you are looking for ways to help them save money. The problem most shop owners come across is that they’re unsure of exactly how to price advertise.
