During his keynote address at the Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo (AAPEX), Steve Forbes, chairman and editor-in-chief of Forbes Media, connected with attendees as he spoke of a new business-friendly environment for the aftermarket due to recent election results. Forbes delivered his address to more than 1,200 attendees during the all-new, free AAPEX General Session on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at The Venetian, Palazzo Ballroom, in Las Vegas.

Scheduled to run from the fourth quarter of 2014 through the first quarter of 2015, the new campaign draws attention to the importance of visibility in safe driving and is based on the fact that if drivers can’t see clearly for one second while driving at 60 mph, then they can’t see clearly for 88 feet … and a lot can happen in 88 feet.

Chris Bishop of Grand Rapids, Minn., is literally one in a million. Bishop, ASE Master Automobile Technician and manager of Bishop’s Performance, his family owned business, was the lucky technician to take the one millionth ASE computer-based test, which happened to be the Heating and Air Conditioning (A7) test. In doing so, he won a $500 tool certificate as part of ASE’s Million Test promotion.
Forty-seven automotive professionals were recognized on November 19, 2014, at the Fall Board of Governors meeting of the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) held at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The annual awards banquet spotlights top scorers on the ASE certification tests.

On Friday, Nov. 14, the Automotive Service Association (ASA) and the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA) hosted a Vehicle Safety Inspection and Maintenance Forum in East Norriton, Pa. The presenters covered a range of topics including the importance of vehicle safety inspection programs in the prevention of crashes, threats to existing programs and potential changes to the program in Pennsylvania and other states.

With the holidays fast approaching, Federated didn’t waste any time beginning its 2014 Toys for Tots seasonal campaign. With several United States Marines in attendance, Federated CEO Rusty Bishop presented a check in the amount of $120,000 to David Adamson, operations chief for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, during the Federated reception held Nov. 4 at the Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo (AAPEX) in Las Vegas.

Bogi Lateiner, owner, 180 Degrees Automotive Inc., has been named the Female Shop Owner of the Year. Lateiner has grown her business from a one-person operation to a mostly female-staffed million-dollar company without any advertising. Her shop is known for its unique design with a coffee-shop inspired waiting room, and is well-respected by her employees and customers.

Currently, car owners are at the mercy of the vehicle manufacturers as to where information on their vehicle is sent. This includes vehicle diagnostic, mileage and geolocation information. All of this information is sent directly to the manufacturer, and they decide with which third parties to share that information.
