Affinia Group Inc. has established a memorial scholarship fund through the University of the Aftermarket Foundation in memory of Larry W. McCurdy, a long-time leader in the industry and Chairman of the Affinia Board of Directors beginning with the company’s inception in 2004.

Affinia Group has initiated the fund with a contribution of $50,000 and pledged an additional $50,000 matching contribution for others who would like to honor Mr. McCurdy’s distinguished career and numerous contributions to the aftermarket.

“Larry served as a mentor to so many people throughout his long career and truly inspired new generations of young talent,” said Affinia President and CEO Terry R. McCormack. “Because Larry was such an advocate for knowledge, professionalism and integrity within the aftermarket, we believe this memorial fund is fitting recognition for his life and career.”

The University of the Aftermarket Foundation supports the continued development and distribution of courses in aftermarket studies in ever-broadening areas. By supporting academic offerings, the Foundation and its donors help to insure that professionals within the industry have the expertise needed to address an increasingly complex field on a global basis.

Throughout his career, Mr. McCurdy was active in advancing the industry through numerous trade organizations as chairman of the Board of MEMA and a recipient of the University of the Aftermarket Foundation’s prestigious Leader of the Year Award.

Mr. McCurdy served as Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer of Echlin Inc. from March 1997 until its merger with Dana in 1998. After the merger, he served as President of the Aftermarket Group at Dana Corporation until his retirement in 2000. He joined the Affinia Group board upon its founding in December 2004 and served in this role until his death on Aug. 3 at age 75.

Mr. McCurdy also held senior executive positions at Cooper Industries, Inc. and Moog Automotive, Inc., where he was President and Chief Executive Officer, and with Tenneco Inc., where he was President of its Walker Manufacturing subsidiary and Executive Vice President of North American Operations.  Mr. McCurdy also served on the Board of Directors of Lear Corporation, Mohawk Industries, Inc. and General Parts, Inc.

When Your Shop Is Worth Much More Than You Thought

Although every sale of a shop in which I am involved has its own unique set of circumstances, which makes my job both very interesting and very challenging, Cowden Automotive stands out as particularly memorable because I was able to demonstrate to the long-time owner, Paul Cowden, that his business was worth about three times what he had initially thought.

Case Study: Owner of San Francisco-based Import Service Shop Delighted to Discover Just How Valuable His Business is to Qualified Buyers
I sometimes share case studies of the clients I have been able to assist in my role as an aftermarket business broker and provider of intermediary and advisory services. I do that when I think the story will provide a reader in similar circumstances with new insights or helpful information.
In the case of Cowden Automotive, Inc., I acted in a consulting capacity assisting the owner and his broker in valuing the business, creating a marketing plan, finding a qualified buyer, and arranging financing for the sale.

Needless to say, delivering that kind of good news to a shop owner is a rewarding experience. Will You Adapt And Cope With Changing Technology?

I remember my boss complaining that electronic ignition was going to destroy our business back in the mid-’70s. “They are taking away our tune up business,” he would say. In some ways, he was right. Technology and change are things we can’t control. In fact, “change” is perhaps the one thing we can count on. And, as in life, it’s how we deal with change that matters.
